Picnic Labs is a new company with a mandate to undo 200 years of corporatised insurance. To pursue this mission we needed to bring together a leadership team with the expertise, passion and commitment to reimagine insurance and build a people-centred business. Our goal is being achieved with the latest technology, innovative business structures, and a people-first company focus. It takes a lot of passion and expertise to reach these goals, and our executive team is leading the way. Time to meet the team behind Picnic:
Every bold start-up needs an experienced, energetic visionary, and Mark Arnold is ours. For more than 20 years Mark has been starting businesses and investing in technology and finance innovations. His background is in management consulting, but his passion has always been reimagining business models, working with entrepreneurial start-ups and improving value for the customer. As the Chair and Founder of Picnic, his mission is to redefine the consumer insurance landscape and to shift the value and power back to the customer. Mark’s vision defines Picnic’s direction. He is also one of the Founding Non-Executive Directors of the Sanfilippo Children's Foundation and is an avid supporter of non-profit organisations that invest in life-changing opportunities for vulnerable young people.
A veteran of data mining, risk-modeling and reinsurance design in the insurance industry, Charlie Pollack is a leader with the experience to build an innovative start-up and run a successful insurance business. As our Chief Executive Officer, Charlie brings major league risk-management to our executive team; he trained as an actuary and worked for eight years as the Chief Actuary at Youi. He was the Principal Actuary - Home Insurance, for almost a decade at Suncorp, having started his career at Royal and Sun Alliance and FAI. A seasoned insurance professional with an appetite for disruption.
A driver of transformational change, with a track record of delivering real business outcomes, Jen Storey has always challenged the status quo. As our Chief Marketing Officer, Jen is a true strategist who looks beyond the horizon to deliver disruptive new possibilities in insurance marketing. Before joining Picnic, Jen’s held leadership communications positions with Suncorp, NAB, and Australia Post.
If you want to reinvent insurance as a customer-friendly service with reduced costs, you need a special technology platform. And that means you need someone like Martin Wells. Since the late 1990s Martin has managed teams and led projects that have delivered everything from virtual ISPs and messenger/gaming clients to 3D games engines and chat services. He has founded three tech companies, he’s been technology adviser to more than 30 companies and Martin was the founder of Intercom, one of Australia's first ISPs. He has operated in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2008, and he’s our Chief Technology Officer.
Insurance is a risk industry, and to properly manage this risk and protect our members we need highly-credentialed actuaries with experience in many scenarios. Our Chief Actuary, John Connor, has a pedigree of specialised expertise across the insurance industry. He was an actuarial consultant with PriceWaterhouseCoopers before becoming a risk actuary at Genworth Financial. And before starting at Picnic in 2017, John held senior roles in risk-management at ANZ General Insurance and the Westpac Group.
Picnic sees insurance from the customer’s perspective, so we need executives like Reece Frazier to remind us that customers have top priority in everything we do. Since 2009 Reece has been applying a human-centred method to transform organisations and delight users. Now, as our Chief Experience Officer, he works with leaders across the Picnic business to reimagine the best product experience and drive improvement. Before joining Picnic at its inception, Reece had a successful career in the Australian Defence Force before working as a business consultant, helping organisations optimise technology adoption.
Insurance companies operate in a tightly-regulated environment - an environment that protects you, the policy-holder. We need to keep many stakeholders appraised of our operations and as our Head of Legal and Compliance, Chris Overs manages this function for the business. For ten years Chris was the Head of Legal and Compliance and the Company Secretary at Youi. And during 30 years in the insurance industry, Chris has held senior positions, including General Manager at Booker International, Lloyd’s Coverholder and South East Asian Technical Accident & Health Claims Manager at ACE, now Chubb Insurance.
